[ARCHIVED] National Alert Cell Phone Test

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and Emergency Alert System (EAS) on October 3. The WEA portion of the test commences at 2:18 p.m. This alert will be on your cell phone and resemble an Amber Alert. The messages will bear the headline “Presidential Alert,” and phones will make a loud tone and have a special vibration. The EAS portion (on radio and TV) follows at 2:20 p.m. The test has been scheduled to ensure that the alert system would work in the event of a national emergency, and U.S. cellphone users will not be able to opt out. The message will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
